River water is less clean than a mountain stream because it has gathered specks of soil, bits of plants and insects and also dissolved chemicals.

2. (a) Screens are metal grids used to remove large pieces of dirt and rubbish.

(b) Water mains are huge pipes which carry water from the water treatment works to houses and factories.

3. (a) In the reservoir water is stored and sand and gravel settle out at the bottom. Some harmful germs and chemicals are also destroyed.

5. You should boil untreated water to kill off germs.

6. Fluoride is added to some water supplies because it prevents tooth decay, especially in young people.
